John Nicholas is Highways England’s South East Operations Asset Needs Manager for Tunnels, Technology & Lighting and Tunnel Manager for Round Hill, Southwick and Hindhead Tunnels, following 11 years with Transport for London as Tunnel Manager for Road Tunnels, managing the A13 DBFO Contract and leading on the operation, maintenance and improvement of 14 TfL Road Tunnels.
John is a Committee Member and active participant in the UK Road Tunnels Association, has lectured on road tunnel operation, maintenance and incident response for the British Tunnelling Society’s Tunnels Design & Construction Course and recognised in 2019 by PIARC UK in the category Safety of road users and workers with a paper on operational response to alternative fuelled vehicle incidents.
John’s experience includes road tunnels operations and maintenance, contract management and procurement, strategic infrastructure protection and 3rd party developments, has led and contributed to drafting highway tunnels maintenance contracts, defining outcomes for tunnel refurbishments and has worked on the construction and design of high profile schemes including the Stanmore Station 3 rd platform (a key London Underground service deliverable for the 2012 Olympic Games), track refurbishment and renewal on mainline railways and the London Tunnels of Channel Tunnel Rail Link, having started his career pipe-jacking and micro-tunnelling in the Republic of Ireland.
John has been the Chair of the TfL Reservist & Ex-Forces Staff Network Group, is Chair, Director and Parent Governor of a Multi-Academy Trust and Junior School, an enthusiastic distance runner, swimmer & active supporter of charitable causes and, most importantly, a member of a happy young family.
