Having qualified as a Mining Engineer, Roger has 30 years’ civil engineering experience starting on the Channel Tunnel. He has dedicated his career to working on tunnel projects or sprayed concrete applications. A significant portion of his career has been spent working for contractors working on small tunnel schemes with additional experience gained working for Designers and specialist suppliers. The major projects he has been involved with ranges from the Channel Tunnel, Heathrow Express, Heathrow T5 Tunnels, Dublin Port Tunnel, A3 Hindhead, Crossrail and Silvertown, Hinkley. As well as these large projects Roger has been involved in numerous smaller tunnel schemes in the utilities sector over the years. As the Tunnelling Manager for Balfour Beatty, Roger is involved in existing projects as well as work winning, feasibility studies, tendering activities and input into various sub-surface projects undertaken by tunnel divisions with the Balfour Beatty Group.
Roger served 3 years on the British Tunnelling Society committee before becoming Vice Chair followed with the 2 year Chairmen tenure. He is also a member of the TunnelSkills management committee and sits on the steering group for the MSc in Tunnelling & Underground Spaces at Warwick University.
