Bill Grose is a chartered civil engineer and now an independent tunnelling consultant after retiring as a director of Arup where he started and developed their tunnelling business. Bill has wide experience of major tunnelling projects having worked on many, across the world, during his career. He is currently working on HS2, Thames Tideway, Crossrail 2 and Silvertown Tunnel in the UK as well as several tunnelled metro projects overseas. During his career Bill spent time with HM Treasury where he co-wrote the IUK Cost Review in 2010. Bill’s tunnelling work has involved the forensic investigation of a number of well-known tunnel collapses and he has been closely associated with producing and updating the widely-used Tunnelling Code of Practice. Bill was Chairman of the British Tunnelling Society 2006-2008 and has served two three-year terms on ICE Council. Bill currently leads BTS’s involvement with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Infrastructure and is vice-chair of the New Civil Engineer Editorial Board. Since semi-retiring Bill now tries to spend more time on sailing, motorbiking, skiing and music, as well as spending time with his four grandchildren.
