Melanie Jans-Singh is a final year PhD student in the Engineering Department at Cambridge. She is fascinated about integrating nature with infrastructure, and how they can interact to maximise positive outcomes. She has been working with Growing Underground, a London based start-up to develop optimisation models and monitoring techniques to optimise the development of urban farming in London. At the Alan Turing Institute, she found inspiration for statistical modelling and machine learning. She holds an MEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Imperial College, and did her masters at ETH Zurich, where she became interested in hydrological processes and monitoring. When not working on models, she loves exploring nature first hand in the mountains and at sea.
