Carbon & Sustainability Initiative of the Year

  • Ward and Burke Construction - Royal Oak and Longsight Park Tunnel

This project narrowly came out on top in a very tight award category. It was particularly impressive to see the way sustainability was built in from the project outset, with a redesign that clearly put carbon saving first. This was illustrated by an impressive comparative Life Cycle Assessment that accompanied the entry, evidencing a significant carbon saving. Alongside the key principle of sustainability by design, it was encouraging to see the co-benefits of this project for the local community and biodiversity, as well as the wider university collaboration.

A clear winner in a competitive field. The aims of the KERN Tunnel Services Dismantling Gantry were very clear from the outset: to remove as many of the hazards as possible associated with dismantling services in 16km long HS2 Chiltern Tunnels.

This winner has a clear and simple approach to the system presented, which clearly added value to the scheme that transitions from construction, with reference to the design, then into the operational as-built estate. The Judging Panel had been hugely impressed by Hewson's entry as it demonstrates a high degree of innovation and an ambitious use of precast concrete in a confined and congested environment and the integration of temporary and permanent works. The entry describes a solution that is not just effective but is also in tune with society's sustainability aims and the application of digital technology to improve health and safety and reduce cost and programme. The entry also evidences how this approach can be scaled up and applied to other type of projects.

Young Tunneller of the Year

Winner:

  • Sarah Duckworth - Skanska Costain Strabag Joint Venture

The winner of the Young Tunneller of the Year award is Sarah Duckworth, a Senior Tunnel Engineer for SCS - Skanska Costain Strabag Joint Venture (Skanska). Sarah delivers complex technical engineering with diligence and passion amongst many disciplines. Sarah has developed complex analytical tools, one of which takes data from the TBM Programmable Logic Controller to determine reconciliation in a simple manner. Sarah's contributions to supporting Women in Engineering and STEM outreach programmes in schools will no doubt improve the future of the industry. What impressed the judges was her ability to seamlessly promote third party and stakeholder confidence in tunnel projects. Her dedication to improving both the technical, social and ecological aspects of the tunnelling industry earned her this prestigious recognition.

Tunnelling Project of the Year (up to $100M)

Winner:

  • Strabag UK - Coire Glas Exploration Works

Starting from a lack of GI in a difficult mountainous terain, this ambitious project used technical tunneling experts and significant geological mapping skills by geologist to use a obserrvational approach to tunneling in hard rock with a major faulting zone . It showed true collaboration between the client, main contractor and delivery teams with the desire to engage with local schools and key stakeholders. The project provided skills transfer to graduates and appentices embarking on a career in hard rock tunneling during the tunneling operations. The project was so successful that it resulted in the client extending the tunneling project by another 20% with the same delivery team.

Collaboration between different departments and companies was essential to the project's success, showcasing exceptional planning and coordination of multiple investigation techniques across difficult terrain.
